Ron Paul Storms the South

In my July 27, 2007 article on this website, "Ron Paul Trumps in South Carolina - an Analysis", I posed the question, "Is South Carolina an example of what may happen in the rest of the South?" Since that time, my question has been answered in spades by the results of various straw polls across the South. Yes, it appears that the South does indeed like Ron Paul's message of Liberty and Constitutional government, principles upon which this country was founded. Here are some straw poll results that demonstrate the South's support for Ron Paul:

  • Dekalb County, GA - win 24%
  • Tuscaloosa, Al - win 81%
  • Maryland - win 28%
  • Gastonia, NC - win 36%
  • Jefferson Co, Alabama - win 58%
  • Cobb County, GA - 2nd 17%
  • Georgetown County, SC - 2nd 18%

Some interesting newspaper story lines showing Ron Paul's strengthening Southern support include an article in Houston Chronicle which was 95% positive, another stating that at the University of Alabama Ron Paul is more popular than their football coach (and that is something!), and finally one concerning the North Carolina straw poll.

Ron Paul's support has spread nationwide as well. One could use the numbers below as a de facto national poll and get a more interesting and probably more accurate view how Republicans are feeling and thinking. The poll queried 2567 people from across the country, all confirmed solid supporters of the Republican Party. The reason why I believe this poll to be more accurate than polls conducted for the national media is because the national media has shown an outright negative bias towards Ron Paul. Why would one believe any news organization which has blatantly demonstrated their biased opinions against Dr. Paul? The following is a cumulative count of all votes since the Iowa Straw Poll:

  • Ron Paul 30%
  • Mitt Romney 23%
  • Fred Thompson 18%
  • Rudy Giuliani 10%
  • Sam Brownback 7%
  • Mike Huckabey 5%
  • John McCain 4%
  • Duncan Hunter 1%
  • Tommy Tancredo 1%
  • Other 1%

Lastly, despite not appearing, Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul has won the inaugural Conservative Leadership Conference straw poll with nearly 33% of the vote.

The Wall Street Journal's Peggy Noon has come to the conclusion that Ron Paul is a force that should be reckoned with in her article when she writes, "Ron Paul's support isn't based on his persona, history or perceived power. What support he has comes because of his views. As he spoke, you could hear other candidates laughing in the background. They should stop giggling, and engage in a serious way."

Grassfire.org (a conservative organization) reported the following in their article "Ron Paul Rising": "Rep. Ron Paul showed the biggest gain from Grassfire's May poll, rising from seventh position (6 percent) to a solid third position (13 percent) – a more than a 50 percent increase in support among grassroots conservatives. Mike Huckabee's support also rose, from 3 to 7 percent. 'Paul's rise shows that conservatives are not all that thrilled with the anointed front runners,' says Elliott. 'Paul's message is resonating with many conservatives, and it would be wise for the other candidates to take note.' Given how much time and money the Ron Paul campaign has spent in North Carolina (zero!), I'm sure they'll be pleased. While the barbecue was excellent, the best part of the evening was the opportunity for numerous "meaningful conversations", as referenced in my previous comments. The straw poll drew Ron Paul supporters both from within and outside the county, and the articulate enthusiasm of the Ron Paul crowd seemed well received by the regular attendees. After the meeting adjourned, questions about Ron Paul and his candidacy from the "regulars" generated healthy discussion for the next hour. By the end of the evening, which lasted longer then many attendees planned, there were a lot more people prepared to answer the question, 'Who is Ron Paul?'"

All this proves that Ron Paul is not just the Internet, one issue, or one region. It proves that he is a force in the South and in the rest of the country. The conservative Republican base that the establishment has until now depended on in the South is up for the taking, and it looks as if they won't be able to stop Ron Paul from wooing them over. In the South, like the German's Ziegfried Line during WWII, all Ron Paul has to do is show up and discover that no one is there to stop him. He has exactly the right message at exactly the right time in history to take the Republican Party, restore our Liberties and save the country. Since a chance like this may never come along again, it is imperative that we take full advantage of this unique situation to relcaim our country and our liberty before it goes spinning off into space.
